Occupational Medicine (MED)

Employers—regardless of company size, sector, or risk potential—are legally required to define and implement the necessary measures to ensure occupational safety and protect employees’ health in the workplace.

The Medical Services support KIT as an employer in fulfilling these legal requirements.

SPECIFACALLY:

What should I do if I experience health complaints that may be related to my work?
Even if you currently do not have a scheduled preventive appointment with the Medical Services, you can request an appointment (“requested preventive consultation”). You can arrange this by phone or email with the Medical Services (MED). If you prefer not to come to MED in person, a telephone consultation is also possible.

Occupational Safety (FAS)

To implement the German Occupational Safety Act (Arbeitssicherheitsgesetz) at KIT, occupational safety specialists (FAS) have been appointed. They support KIT as an employer in all matters relating to occupational health and safety and accident prevention, including the human-centred design of work. They also advise the responsible persons, in particular on the planning and operation of facilities as well as the design of workplaces.

Further information is available here.

Ergonomics at Screen-Based Workstations

Consultation
The Occupational Safety Specialists (FAS) and the Medical Services (MED) provide advice and support in setting up an ergonomic workstation.

Ergonomic equipment
A range of ergonomic aids—such as vertical mice, document holders, footrests, etc.—can be borrowed from FAS/MED for trial use if needed. An overview of the available aids can be found in the document “Overview of ergonomic aids available for loan from FAS/MED”. Further information is available on the KISS pages.

Preventing discomfort from prolonged sitting with an AI-based health coach
With the Intelligent Sitting Behaviour Assistant ISA from Deep Care GmbH, we support you in developing a healthy work routine. Further information and how to borrow ISA free of charge can be found under “Digital Services” (https://www.ifss.kit.edu/bgm/231.php).

Useful resources
In 2024, the Student Health Lab developed a guide as part of the ActiveLearn project: “How do I sit correctly and set up my workstation optimally?” It is available via the KIT Library (KIT-BIB): https://publikationen.bibliothek.kit.edu/1000176360
