Study Objectives

Motor skills and physical activity are important aspects of healthy development in childhood and adolescence. The main goal of MoMo is to analyze developmental, historical, and periodic trends in motor performance and physical activity, as well as the underlying influencing factors in Germany. This aims to contribute to the long-term improvement of the health situation for children and adolescents. For example, the study seeks to answer the following questions:

  • Do active and 'fit' children and adolescents remain active and 'fit' adults?
  • Does physical activity influence chronic diseases?

To achieve this, an analysis of the influencing factors of physical-sporting activity and motor performance, as well as the effects of physical activity and motor performance on the health development of children and adolescents, is undertaken. For this purpose, MoMo data can be linked with other content areas of the main study (KiGGS), such as height, weight, health, nutrition, and environment.

In detail, we pursue the following 4 goals:

  1. Description of the current state of motor performance, physical (in)activity, and biopsychosocial health factors.
  2. Identification of trends and period effects in motor performance, physical activity, and biopsychosocial health factors over time.
  3. Description of the development of motor performance, physical (in)activity, and biopsychosocial health factors over time.
  4. Description and analysis of changes and development in motor performance, physical (in)activity, and biopsychosocial health factors in the context of socioecological contexts and influencing factors.
