2026 German University Runners-Up!
What a weekend for the WG Karlsruhe handball team! The start of the tournament could hardly have been more bitter. In the very first play of the opening match, our backcourt player Elias Dörflinger suffered a serious ankle injury and had to be rushed to the hospital immediately. The shock ran deep; everyone’s thoughts were with Elias, and so the team could not manage more than a draw against Jena in their first game. But the team then showed an impressive response. With a decisive 27–5 victory over Berlin, WG Karlsruhe secured first place in their group. In the quarterfinals, Magdeburg was defeated 12–7, before Rostock was also overcome 8–7 in the semifinals on Sunday after a passionate battle. Thus, after an emotional and grueling tournament, WG Karlsruhe reached the final of the German University Championships. There, the team had to cope with two additional absences and faced a strong squad from Bochum. Despite tremendous effort, they were defeated 7–15 by the deserving German University Champions. In the end, however, pride and recognition for an extraordinary team performance prevail. After the loss of one of their key players, the team pulled even closer together and fought their way to the final for Elias. By finishing as German University runners-up, WG Karlsruhe has also qualified for the 2027 European Championships. Unfortunately, Elias’s worst fears have since been confirmed. He had to undergo emergency surgery on-site due to his severe ankle injury and remains in the hospital at this time. The entire university sports community wishes you, Elias, much strength for the coming weeks and a speedy and full recovery.
