Pouring rain, tough opponents - the playing conditions at the 2011 Student University Bowl in American Football at KIT's Uni Stadium were anything but ideal. And yet the competition weekend was successful for the Karlsruhe Engineers, who also hosted the two-day tournament: The KIT university group won the Open American Football of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Hochschulsportverband (adh) for the third time in a row - they are still the German university champions in American Football.

"As hosts of the tournament, our team is of course doubly pleased to be able to keep the trophy. But the road to get there was a hard piece of work," says team member Sebastian Fünfgeld. Most of the Karlsruhe Engineers' players have already gained experience in the second Bundesliga this season, with the majority of the students already playing for the Badener Greifs in regular league action.

"Conditions are tougher for up-and-comers in the second league, they usually have to take a lot of defeats - but it was this experience that proved to be an advantage at the Hochschulbowl," Fünfgeld said. In the first game, the Engineers defeated Hamburg 35-6. In the game against the Mannheim team that immediately followed, the Karlsruhe Engineers also impressed with their varied passing and running game. In the end the result was 28:7 for the Engineers.

On the second day of play, the players faced the HSU Snipers from Hamburg again in pouring rain. The guests from the north had considerable problems moving the ball in the heavy conditions, while the second-league experienced offense of the Karlsruhe team was hardly impressed by this. At halftime, the score was 28-0 in favor of Karlsruhe when the Hamburg team abandoned the game due to the weather. The Karlsruhe team then faced Mannheim one last time and ended up winning again 14-0.

The Karlsruhe Engineers thus won the adh-Open American Football for the third time in a row. The Hochschulbowl took place for the 22nd time in 2011.
