German University Orienteering Championships in the Harz Mountains

  • Datum: 24.04.2025
  • On the first weekend in April, the German University Orienteering Championships took place in Clausthal-Zellerfeld (Harz) and KIT also sent a delegation of four. It consisted of 2 experienced "orienteers" and 2 beginners who found their way to the sport this semester through university sports and were now taking part in their first competitions.

The first event on Friday afternoon was a sprint relay, i.e. a 2-person relay in urban terrain, to determine the DHM relay champions. The northern part of the TU Clausthal, which organized the event excellently together with the MTK Bad Harzburg, served as the venue. The organizers also used a labyrinth of fences for additional orientation difficulties. In warm and sunny conditions, our first relay team delivered a good race and finished 4th in a strong field of participants. Unfortunately, the second relay team overran a control and was excluded from the ranking.

The following Saturday included the highlight of the weekend in the morning: the German Sprint Championships, which were also the individual German Championships. Almost 800 athletes competed in all categories and in the men's elite, in which all KIT athletes competed, there were over 90 participants. The individual sprint started in the center of Clausthal, then led downhill at high speed through parks and finally steeply uphill through the southern part of the campus to the finish at the university canteen. Everyone ran well, but we were still annoyed at the finish line because we made some orientation errors that cost us time.

Nevertheless, the runs and the whole weekend with the team were great fun and we all learned a lot to do better next year.
