Friday evening, May 30th. The festively decorated Wolfgang Rihm Forum at the University of Music was transformed into the dance floor of the AStA University Ball. Between live music, dancing and performances, the evening's program included a show by the unicycle course instructors.
The performance was put together and rehearsed in the weeks leading up to the event. Normally, the focus of the course is on teaching the basics: many participants are just learning to ride, while others approach more difficult tricks with some previous experience. Instead, in the weeks leading up to the ball, the focus was on designing, rehearsing and practising the choreography to ensure that everything was just right on stage. Before the performance, the tension was palpable: would everything go as planned and how would the audience react?
The show started at 11pm. The performance was accompanied by the song "The Greatest Show" and the title was the program. At first, the four unicyclists rolled across the dance floor in a seemingly disorderly fashion, but shortly afterwards they came together again in the middle of the stage. From then on, they alternated between two-man and group elements. In between, the audience also got to see some hopping to the beat of the music. Colorful lights created an impressive atmosphere. After a few final extravagant tricks, the show ended with a dismount from the unicycle and applause from the audience.
The evening was exhausting for the four performers, but also a great success. During the rehearsals, the focus was on enjoying the performance. The participants in the university sports course were also able to enjoy it. The sight also motivated them to try out more difficult elements during training and not to lose patience if something didn't work out. Before and after the performance, there was still enough time to conquer the dance floor - on two legs this time.
