DHM Swimming in Würzburg

This year, the German University Swimming Championships took place on the Whitsun weekend from 18-20 May 2018 in Würzburg.

Among the 429 starters were 29 swimmers from Karlsruhe, meaning that WG Karlsruhe once again had one of the largest teams. A particular challenge this year was the organization of external accommodation and transport to and from the competition venue. Thanks to coordination between the heads of the various universities, some teams found accommodation at a campsite just outside the city and were thus able to spend some time together outside the swimming hall.

Fortunately, the participants from Karlsruhe did not let the additional distance between the competition venue and their accommodation get them down and actively cheered on their teammates, enabling them to show off their best performances in the water. On Friday, three team members from Karlsruhe qualified for the finals in the 100m butterfly with Saskia Bluhm (7th place), Simon Lang (7th place) and Jan Schützke (4th place) and Marco Gast (200m freestyle) and Hector Sauri Suarez (200m backstroke) were rewarded with two 7th places. The first day of competition was rounded off with a 7th place for the female 4x100m freestyle relay team and a 6th place for the male 4x100m freestyle relay team.

On Saturday, the female 4x100m medley relay team of Nadia Maeso Serrano, Maya Ducke, Saskia Bluhm and Regina Hackler secured 3rd place and thus the only medals for the Kalsruh team thanks to the disqualification of the favored Würzburg team. The butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle mixed relay teams also finished in the top 8. Saturday was rounded off with a fun relay and a joint pasta party.

After a short day of competition on Sunday, on which Regina Hackler in the 200 butterfly (7th place) and Marco Gast in the 200m medley (6th place) once again performed well after the exhausting weekend, the journey home began. All in all, we can look back on a successful weekend with a good 8th place for the Karlsruhe team in the university points ranking. With great memories and a strengthened team spirit, we will continue training in the university pool.

We would like to thank the organizers in Würzburg for the great competition, the WG Braunschweig for the catering at the campsite and our university sports team for their support.
