Report Volleyball Men II
On Thursday, May 8th, the second men's team of the WG Karlsruhe traveled to Konstanz for the preliminary round of the German University Championship (DHM) in volleyball.
In the very first game, we faced Darmstadt, last year's winners of the preliminary round. After an extremely exciting and hard-fought match, we were ultimately narrowly defeated 1:2 in a tie-break.
In the second match, we faced the favorites from Constance, whose team consisted mainly of experienced players from the 2nd Bundesliga. Although we were initially able to keep up well in both sets, we ultimately had to acknowledge the strength of the team from Constance, who ultimately won the preliminary round and thus qualified for the final round on 21/22 June in Karlsruhe.
We faced Heidelberg in the third match. After a confident first set, we got off to a somewhat bumpy start in the second round, but quickly regained our form and won the match 2:0.
In the final match against Freiburg, we had to switch a diagonal attacker to the outside position due to an injury, which weakened our otherwise very stable reception somewhat. Despite this change, the whole team put up an excellent fight, but we were still beaten 2:0 after a close duel.
Overall, however, it was a strong performance that we would like to build on next year and continue to improve.
Report Volleyball Ladies II
On Thursday, August 15, the second women's team of the WG Karlsruhe traveled to Heidelberg for the preliminary round of the German University Championships (DHM) in volleyball.
The first game was against Marburg. The team quickly and confidently won this game 2:0, mainly thanks to the strong series of serves from the middle blockers.
A much stronger opponent awaited them in the next match, Konstanz. The team had to work much harder against Konstanz, but was ultimately able to win the match 2:0 thanks to a strong team performance and outstanding actions on the diagonal.
The last group match was against the hosts from Heidelberg, who were also considered the favorites. The team started the first set very frantically and was able to stabilize somewhat towards the end of the set, but not enough to make up the deficit. The second set also began somewhat sleepily again, but the team fought back impressively from the middle of the set onwards.
Despite spectacular defensive actions and strong serves and attacks, it was unfortunately not enough in the end against the superior Heidelberg team. Despite the narrow defeat and missing out on the final round as a result, the team put in a very convincing performance overall, which they will hopefully be able to build on next year.
