KIT Hockey Teams at DHM in Krefeld

For the first time, the German University Championship (DHM) Hockey was held in Krefeld on 01 and 02 July 2016.

The competition community from Karlsruhe was represented there with one men's and one women's team. Both teams traveled with 7 players without "real goalkeeper(s)", mainly due to the upcoming exam period, unfortunately a little decimated in terms of numbers and so had to play their games with only one substitute per team. The games were played on a small field (5 players + goalkeeper) on the grounds of the local field hockey club, Crefelder HTC. A total of seven men's and six women's teams took part in the event.

In the men's competition, two groups were played after the cancellation of Uni Hamburg. WG Karlsruhe was drawn into a group with TU Berlin and Uni Kassel. Against the latter they started successfully into the tournament with a sovereign opening victory, which was enough to reach the semi-finals despite the following defeat against Berlin. There they met Cologne on Saturday and lost in a hard-fought game, but this was to be tolerated against such a strong team, which later also won the title.

4th place for the men

In the match for 3rd place, which was shortened due to the fact that three of our players had to travel to Ludwigsburg for the promotion of the club team, we lost by a narrow margin of 0:1 against the University of Göttingen and thus unfortunately did not make it onto the podium.
The women's competition was played in the mode "everyone against everyone". In the first game they met WG Wuppertal, the only opponent in the tournament, who also had players from the university sports team in their ranks. The remaining games were unfortunately more one-sided, as all the other teams were packed with players from the Bundesliga and even the U21 national team. Despite a great fight, we were ultimately without a chance against these teams. The best game followed at the end against the WG Duisburg-Essen, the later title winner. Although they also lost 0:5, they were able to set some offensive accents. Unfortunately, however, as in the previous games, the necessary luck was missing in the conclusion.

Strong competition in the women's competition

While at some universities, which participated in the championship, the sport field hockey is not to be found at all in the offer of the university sport, the WG Karlsruhe was represented almost without exception with players, who also take part in the training of the university sport and could place beside Goettingen as the only competition community both a woman and a man team.

In summary, we can nevertheless state that we, the WG Karlsruhe, had a successful weekend in terms of sports. We returned from Krefeld without a title, but by no means empty-handed. Because the possibility to measure ourselves against other, better players, means also to be able to improve the own performance and to collect experiences, which will help us with certainty at the next German university championship.
